Obviously hockey arenas are used for more than just hockey events. If they did not, they
would go broke. However, people often do not realize that the arena has other events on ice besides hockey. They often use the same ice for events such as figure skating and Disney on Ice. In some cases they will simply cover the edges of the ice to make the rink a bit smaller and more intimate for a skating competition, and others they will go as far as painting a white layer over the top of the ice which can then be scraped off by the zamboni after the event.
