The most recent team to put their own fan's wishes on behind their own would be the Vancouver Canucks. In recent years the team has tried out a few different goal songs but none have taken off like "Holiday" by Green Day. After high demand from fans for this song, the Canucks brought it back last season, and it seemed like the goal song saga was over once and for all. However if there is one thing I have learned from my own team (the St. Louis Blues) if management wants to make a change that is unpopular with the fans, they will never give up.
Sure enough, this season began and Canucks' management changed the goal song, again. They claimed that the 50'th Anniversary Season should be marked by a fresh, new goal song. In typical management fashion, they said one thing then did the exact opposite, choosing the 1978 Van Halen song, "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love." It has not gone over well and Canucks fans have begged for them to bring back Holiday. This led to a petition to change the song back. The team DJ, Barron S has stated that if the petition reaches 50,000 names, the team will in fact change it back.
While this sounds like a small step in the right direction, it screams to me as a management team that has little regard for their fans and just wants to entertain themselves. Fans should not have to go to such great lengths to get the entertainment they deserve (and pay for).
I would not begin to say that managing an NHL team is easy, but there are certain aspects of it that would seem to be a no-brainer. Listen to your fans. They are paying to come to the game. It is the money from the fans that allows all of these fancy jacket wearing managers to have a job, so reward them by listening and catering the experience to them, not yourselves. The Carolina Hurricanes listen to their fans, give them what they want, and that fan base has made a huge rebound.
Until teams like the Canucks and Blues have people in charge who actively listen to their fans, the fans will have to work hard to get the change they deserve. So if you would like to help remind the Canucks' management who really matters at these games, then head over to the Change.org petition and sign up.
